Order ahead by text. Walk in to a bag with your name on it.
Dispensary customers know what they want before they leave the house. Batchly takes the order by text or phone, around the clock, from your live menu, and your team has it pulled, labeled, and named before the car parks.
This is the deep dive on order-ahead: how it works end to end, why phone-and-pickup fits this business better than almost any other retail, and what the arithmetic says it is worth. The short version of everything below: it runs inside the register as part of Shophand, and it moves the line.
How it works, end to end
- The customer texts your store number, or calls it. Nothing to install, no account to create. "Two carts and a pack of the gummies, pickup at 5" is enough to start.
- Front Desk answers, 24/7. The AI reads your live inventory, so it only offers what is on the shelf right now. It confirms items and quantities, notes a pickup time if the customer gives one (otherwise the order is marked ASAP), and it handles the is-it-in and how-much questions customers actually ask. Every call leaves a transcript you can read later, and every text order lands on a ticket with the items listed.
- The order lands in a queue at the counter. Items listed, name attached, pickup time visible to the whole team.
- Your team pulls and labels. Staff pulls the items from the shelf and applies the labels your state requires. Batchly does not print compliance labels. Your people label, the register keeps the queue and the names straight.
- The bag goes on the pickup shelf, named. ID check at handoff, logged on the sale the way every age-restricted sale is in Batchly (mark your products age-restricted; see compliance). The customer is in and out in about a minute.
The line at the counter keeps moving the whole time, because order-ahead work happens between walk-ins instead of in front of them.
Why phone and pickup dominate this business
Most retail browsing is discovery. Dispensary retail is mostly re-buying. The menu is stable, the regular knows the product, and in a typical shop of about 100 SKUs, roughly 20 core items drive most of the volume. When a customer already knows the SKU, standing in a line to say it out loud is pure friction. So they call. Dispensary phones ring all day with exactly this: is it in, how much, can you hold one. Every one of those calls is an order trying to happen.
Order-ahead turns that instinct into a queue. The customer who texts at lunch is not the customer standing ten deep at 5:40. And a customer reading your menu over text, with time to think, has room to add one more item that a customer holding up a line does not.
The math, done in the open
Use your own numbers; here is the frame. Say your average basket is $60 (published adult-use averages run $50 to $100). Three missed calls a day is $180 a day, about $65,000 a year, walking to the shop that picked up. Five a day is $300 a day, about $110,000 a year. The multiplication is ours and the published figures are published, so hold them loosely.
Throughput works the same way. Say a budtender turns a walk-in in five minutes: that is 12 baskets an hour at the register. A named bag changes hands in about a minute. Every order that moves from the line to the pickup shelf gives that hour back to the customers who do want to browse, and the register rings both.
None of this needs a discount, a promotion, or a new hire. It needs the phone answered every time, and Batchly does that part.
What it asks of you: one switch
Order-ahead is part of Front Desk, which comes with Shophand, Batchly's optional AI staff, at $49.96/mo on top of the $99 platform, and it runs inside the register: your store number, your menu, your queue. The menu is your live inventory, the same stock counts described on the cannabis hub, so there is no second system to keep in sync and nothing sells that is not on the shelf. Setup is turning it on and telling your regulars they can text you. In Arizona, where as of September 2026 ADHS requires each licensee to maintain its own tracking system rather than a statewide seed-to-sale platform (confirm current AZDHS rules for your license type), there is no integration to wait on either.
Batchly runs whole counters in specialty retail, where dual pricing pays for the register. Order-ahead is the same idea pointed at the phone: the register doing revenue work, not just recording it.

Questions operators ask about order-ahead
What does the customer need to install?
Nothing. They text your store number or call it. No app, no account, no login. The reply comes from your store's Batchly text line, and the confirmation reads back the order number and the total, paid at pickup.
What happens if an item sells out before the order is pulled?
The menu Front Desk sells from is your live inventory, so it stops offering an item the moment the last unit rings. If a shelf count catches a discrepancy during the pull, the order shows the items and the customer's number in the queue, so your team calls or texts them before pickup.
Who pulls and labels the order?
Your team. The order lands in the queue with the items listed, your staff pulls them from the shelf, applies the labels your state requires, and bags the order under the customer's name. Batchly does not print compliance labels. It keeps the queue moving and the bag named.
How does the customer pay?
At the counter, however you run it today, with the 21+ ID check logged at handoff. Details on the payments page.
Batchly is business software for licensed cannabis retailers, 21+. Rules change and vary by state and license type, and nothing on this page is legal advice. Verify current requirements with your counsel and your licensing authority.
