A smoke shop POS that hands the card fee back

High margins on glass and accessories, then the card processor quietly takes a slice of every sale. Batchly is built to give that slice back with dual pricing, check IDs at the counter, and keep hundreds of SKUs straight.

Smoke shops are a good business on paper. A $40 water pipe cost you $16. Papers and wraps sell all day at a fat markup. But nearly every ticket runs on a card now, and at 3.5% plus $0.20 a swipe, the processor is skimming your best margins before you ever count the drawer. That fee is the one line on your P&L you were told you had to eat. You don't.

What the card fee actually costs you

Run the math on a busy counter. The percentage is bad enough, but the flat $0.20 per swipe stacks up fast when the average ticket is a pack of papers and a lighter. Here is roughly what a shop eats each month depending on volume, assuming a $22 average ticket:

Monthly card salesFee you eat now (absorb)With pass (customer covers)
$20,000~$880/mo$0
$45,000~$1,985/mo$0
$80,000~$3,525/mo$0

The middle row is the everyday shop: about $45,000 a month on cards works out to roughly $24,000 a year going to fees. That is a part-time employee, a new display case, or your rent. Want your own numbers? Run them through the card fee calculator.

Dual pricing puts the fee where it belongs

This is the one thing Batchly does that a generic register won't. On every sale you choose who covers the processing fee — three modes, no more:

It is framed as a cash discount: cash-paying customers get the lower price. That model is permitted in all 50 states, which is exactly why Batchly is built on it instead of a surcharge. It is not legal advice — confirm the details with your processor and counsel and check your state — but the compliant path is the one baked in. See how it works on the dual pricing page.

Card the customer without slowing the line

Tobacco and vapor are 21+, and a failed compliance check is the kind of thing that costs a license. Batchly puts the ID prompt right in the sale. Age-restricted SKUs — disposables, tobacco, vapor, kratom where your state requires it — can trigger a birthday check before the item rings. Staff scan the license, the register confirms the date of birth, and the check is logged on the sale so you have a record if anyone ever asks. New hire on a Friday night? The register won't let them skip it.

Inventory built for a wall of SKUs

A smoke shop isn't a coffee stand with eight items. You carry a few hundred SKUs and they don't behave alike:

Batchly tracks each piece, including the one-off glass that never fits a neat SKU list, and it watches your stock as you sell. When a core item drops below its reorder point you get a low-stock flag before the shelf is empty, not after a regular walks out.

The 20 that pay the rent

However many SKUs are on the wall, roughly 20 core movers drive the volume — the papers, the top disposable, the house grinder, the lighters at the counter. Batchly surfaces those 20 so you can watch the numbers that matter, keep them in stock, and stop letting a dead SKU tie up cash on the shelf.

The staff you didn't hire

Behind the counter you're one or two people. Shophand is the AI staff bundle that fills the gaps: Front Desk answers the shop phone 24/7 so you're not shouting "one sec" across the store to take a "you got the big ones back in?" call, and The Usual texts your regulars right before they run out of their papers or their brand, so one YES reply has it bagged and waiting when they walk in. It runs on top of the same register, not a second system to babysit.

Straight pricing, 21 days to try it

Batchly is $99 a month per store, and your processing rate is set at underwriting. Bring any published quote and it gets matched or beaten. Questions smoke shop owners ask

Is a cash discount legal for a smoke shop?

Cash discounting — a lower price for cash and the regular price on card — is permitted in all 50 states, which is why Batchly is built around it rather than a surcharge. Surcharging is a different model that is capped or restricted in some states. Confirm the details with your processor and your own counsel, and check your state before you switch. More on the cash discounting explainer.

Can Batchly check IDs at the register?

Yes. Age-restricted items can require an ID prompt before the sale rings, and staff can scan a driver's license to confirm date of birth. The register doesn't set the minimum age — that is your legal call per item — but a flagged item can't ring until the check is logged on the sale.

How many products can Batchly handle?

A typical smoke shop carries a few hundred SKUs — glass, grinders, papers, wraps, disposables, hemp and kratom, torches. Batchly tracks all of them, including one-of-a-kind glass pieces, and flags your core movers when they run low so you reorder before you sell out.

Will dual pricing scare customers away?

It is shown as a cash discount, not a penalty. The register displays the cash price and the card price side by side, and the customer picks how they pay. Most shops find regulars simply start bringing cash for the lower price, and card customers cover the fee they were creating anyway.

Do I need special hardware?

No proprietary lock-in. Batchly runs in the browser on the tablet or computer you already have, and card-present payments run on a customer-facing terminal — tap, chip, and swipe — with payments by Batchly. The card is read on the terminal, so raw card data never touches Batchly.
